Art Deco Renovation – now we’re at the photography stage..
Post by: sharon on August 12th, 2010 | File Under UncategorizedWell, at last…we’re now into the photography stage. A few months ago I was engaged to work on a new project which involved an extension, or I should say a house raising. This house was raised and underneath was built in to create a new lounge and living area, laundry, bathroom and two bedrooms.
The owners are mad about Art Deco, have no intention of ever moving, and hence wanted Art Deco features in the downstairs. This was truly an awesome project to work on. The project included selecting the floor finishes, fabric for the window treatments, fabric for the re-upholstery of the Genoa Lounge, finishes for the laundry, design of the bathroom including the tiling, shower and bathroom fixtures and fittings plus the overall colour schemes.
The bathroom, in particular, was a great part of the project and I must admit probably my favourite part. We designed the overall Art Deco look and feel through the design of the tiles, fixtures such as the toilet, basin and custom made glass cabinet. The linen cupboard doors were also routed around the edge to replicate the Art Deco glass design in the bathroom cabinet.
The ceiling cornices were also specifically ordered, the design was typical Art Deco, but reasonably plaiin in style, this not only achieved the look we were looking for but also fit well inside the budget. The cost of the cornicing really wasn’t that much more than the standard cornices most people put into their extensions, but it makes a huge difference to the end result.
Lighting played an important part of the look and feel, we used Art Deco pendant lights for the loung area, together with the wall sconces, which gives the room a beautiful feel, especially at night. The room has a certain moodiness to it when the only lighting is from the wall sconces. The lighting detail was topped off with the installation of Art Deco lighting switch plates which certainly add to the character of the space. For the stairs, we also incorporated small lights on the stairwell, so as you progress up the stairs ambient light is created.
The old saying about paying attention to detail, certainly is key to the overall effect, and this runs true for whatever style, look and feel you are trying to achieve. The photography for this renovation is taking place next week, so hopefully within a couple of weeks after that I’ll be able to post a few photos of the end result.

One of the first things to consider is where you want to place your rug, as this will determine the size for your rug. For example, if the rug is to be used as an area rug in the lounge then it is advisable to leave a space of approximately 1 metre between the edge of the rug and wall.
